The road to safety

Two friends, Lallu and Sallu, left their house and began to make their way down a busy market place near the coastal area of Alleppy, Kerala. The weather was what they had expected it would be, being sultry, and they were dressed appropriately in cotton lungi. As they turned the corner to walk along the riverbank, they commented on the funky sophisticated-looking house boat that was sailing just ahead of them. It was filled with foreigners from other countries accompanied by their tiny tots in hats and swimwear drinking coconut cocktails in fancy glasses. The traffic rushed by on their left and the house boat sailed on their right. As they progressed in the direction of the bridge, they wished they too could be on the houseboat with a cocktail in their hands and beat the sultry heat of the day. Instead they continued to walk with longing glances on the cocktails in the hands of the foreigners.

Just then the weather changed and hailstorm struck the town. The two friends lifted their lungi and ran to concrete safety where they watched in shock as the roof of the houseboat collapsed under heavy hailstorm and the dripping and screaming foreigners were rescued by the localites.

The friends realized that "coconuts were far safer than cocktails." Moral of the story is to be satisfied in the simple joys of life!

Warm regards,

Malathi Anantha and Sonam Kumari
